Arduino Uno with Sensor Kit Base and additional sensors

Hello everyone,
This is my first post here so excuse me if I post incorrectly. This is my second time dealing with an arduino so I am also a beginner. I am using the Arduino Sensor Kit Base with an Arduino Uno. The Uno is not the R3 version as recommended on the sensor kit page. After connecting my uno to the base, the i2c sensors did not work but others that use the D4-6 pins did (LED, button buzzer). I came to realize that the old Uno that I have does not have the additional 2 pins on each side (on one side it is the SDA and SCL pins). Since those pins are required for communication through the i2c protocol, that is the source of why no i2c devices were detected when scanned for. I have 2 questions that arise from my current situation:

  1. Is it possible to avoid purchasing a new uno r3? If so, how do I connect the uno to the base sensor kit since when I do, the sensor kit has 4 more pins that have nowhere to go on the uno (2 on each side)? I am slightly aware that I can connect the A4 and A5 pins on the uno to the SDA and SCL, but then all other pins on the uno would not be able to be pushed into the base kit.
  2. I intend to add extra sensors INCLUDING all the ones on the sensor kit base. Those are the BME280 and the CCS811 DFROBOT air quality sensor. How do I go about connecting those on the sensor kit base since there are many available pins? (Assuming I am using an R3 uno with no i2c issues, as I will order one anyways)
